Rocky Mountain NAACP CO-MT-WY State Area Conference Statement Ahead of Nuggets v. Heat NBA Finals Game

ROCKY MOUNTAIN, CO – On May 20, 2023, the NAACP issued a national travel advisory for Florida in response to state leadership’s aggressive attempts to erase Black history and restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in Florida, warning travelers of the state’s open hostility towards Black Americans and other marginalized groups. Ahead of the Nuggets upcoming game in Miami, Florida for NBA finals, the Rocky Mountain NAACP CO-MT-WY State Area Conference released the following statement:

“The Rocky Mountain NAACP Colorado-Montana-Wyoming State Conference (RMNAACP) stands in support of the advisory in Florida. We denounce hate-inspired leadership. Florida is a state that clearly devalues and minimizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by Black Americans and other marginalized groups. Governor DeSantis’ decisions to ban an AP course on African American Studies and to sign a bill defunding Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs were deliberate attempts at erasing Black history, culture, and identity from Florida’s education system.

We encourage allies of RMNAACP in Colorado to join us in the fight against Florida’s regressive policies. We must continue to call out Governor Ron DeSantis on his deliberate assaults on Black Americans and our history.

RMNAACP is grateful to our Colorado community leaders and legislators for their efforts to protect the rights of marginalized groups in the state of Colorado. It is important that we continue to work together to ensure that all individuals have access to the resources they need and deserve. The Denver Nuggets’ success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team players, coaching staff and the support of their fans, including the Black, Brown and LGBTQIA communities in Colorado. We stand against all policies that marginalize any human in this state and encourage our allies to join us in the continued fight for equity and justice for all. Go Nuggets!”
