Did you know the Fair Housing Act is 55 years old(April 11th, 2023) as Law in the U.S.? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination on April 4th,1968, strongly influenced the haste approval of this Historic Action/Movement(7 days). In the two decades leading up to the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, African-American legislators regularly called for Congressional action to end housing segregation.
The debate intensified as the growing open housing movement and urban unrest throughout the country brought the issue of Fair Housing to Public Attention. Opponents asserted such legislation would rob Americans of their basic right to private property as well as the right of an owner to decide to whom to sell or rent that property.
